Stanford

This post is woefully tardy, but I've been busy. First item on the agenda...I'm at Stanford! After some delays waiting for my new computer, my dad and I finally left last Saturday. We used to go out that direction all the time, when my dad was working on projects out in Gallup and Zuni - I had forgotten what a beautiful drive it is through western New Mexico. We got through Arizona and stopped in Kettleman City, California, which you can see is solidly in the middle of nowhere. I never really knew it, but much of southeastern California is very, very empty. No farming, no ranching, nothing. There were some stretches where we would drive for an hour or more without seeing a single building or off-ramp.

We got in about 10am on Sunday, and drove down the beautiful, palm tree lined Palm Drive. After waiting for the office to open, we got the keys to my apartment, and started moving in. The building is practically brand-new, and extremely well maintained. I have about 350 square feet of studio apartment, equipped with a full kitchen, giant bathroom, large closet, and living room/bedroom area. (I'll post pictures when I finish getting everything put away.)

Classes started Tuesday, and although I haven't set my final schedule yet, it looks like a pretty good line-up. I've decided that I am going to try to make my own area of specialization, something similar to a Software Engineering program with some Human-Computer Interaction and Artificial Intelligence thrown in.

I've seen a couple people from Academy, and should get in touch with a few more pretty soon. If anyone else wants to come visit the area at any point, or head up to wine country, just let me know.

I like how, on the configuration page for that laptop, each of the two available screen options are listed as "May delay your order." Seriously though, it looks like a nice system. Palm Drive isn't too shabby, either.

Yeah, for some reason these systems take a really long time to build and ship. There are a couple quirks, like the light on the back which you can't turn off unless you turn off the computer, and it runs pretty hot, since I got it with two hard drives (yay RAID!).

RAID, eh? I guess the question is: are you a RAID0 kind of person, or a RAID1 type of person?

Right now a RAID0, but I think I might go to RAID1 here pretty soon...each drive is 100GB, so for the time being, it might be better to just have that much, but well backed up.
